Housing. Who Can Live Here, Who Decides & Why?

In this evening with True Story Theater, you will get to explore and express your personal relationship to the themes brought up during the July 13th panel,  “Who Can Live Here, Who Decides & Why?”

During the show, audience volunteers are invited to share their own experiences and feelings about fair and affordable housing, and their responses to the town’s new commitments towards making Arlington a place where those who want to live here can do so. On the spot, True Story’s actors will embody the essence of the feelings and themes we all heard.  Through the hour, we will all gain a pulse on the community’s connection to these important housing issues.  Come to speak or just to watch.

We encourage you to download and browse the new Town of Arlington Fair Housing Action plan, especially the action steps at the end.

This performance, like the July 13 panel, is part of the Town of Arlington Community Conversation series hosted by the office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, and is funded in part by a grant from the Arlington Cultural Council.

New to a True Story Theater performance?

You are welcome to share your own personal feelings and experiences–and fine to just watch and listen. Each person who takes a risk to share will be reflected, respectfully and creatively, by Arlington’s improvisational theater troupe, True Story Theater. The performers will instantly embody the essence of what they heard through movement, music and drama. The purpose of these True Story events is to help all of us in town more deeply understand each other in an honest, human way, from the heart.

More about Arlington community conversations:

“This series is meant to open up the dialogue to address challenges past and present the Town of Arlington has faced, acknowledge plans for moving forward in the journey to dismantle the systemic racism that is embedded into all of the Town’s institutions, and provide an opportunity for community voices and concerns to be heard and discussed.”

What happens in a True Story Theater performance?  Our events bring together the delight of improvisation with the courageous vulnerability of people sharing their personal truth.

The show’s emcee (called “the conductor”) facilitates brief, spontaneous conversations with volunteers from the audience who share their own feelings and experiences related to the show’s theme.  After each conversation, the actors and musician immediately embody the key feelings and actions they heard, using movement, music, dialogue, and superb listening. All of it is improvised on the spot. During the course of a 75 minute show, True Story enacts about 6-8 stories.

From this simple interaction, audience members feel validated, laugh, cry, get insights about their lives, and feel an expanded sense of community. You can share a moment from your life and see it performed, or just come to watch.

What are True Story Theater’s classes like?  We will teach you the basics of Playback Theatre, which can hone your listening skills for everyday life.  All are welcome.  Classes are supportive, informal, intimate, and fun, an enriching experience for both newcomers and experienced actors.
