Bystander Intervention Training

January 27, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Saturday Jan. 27th, 10-1pm
Bystander Intervention Training to address implicit and explicit racism and bias in our everyday lives.
Please follow this link to register in advance.
Location: First Congregational Church of Milton, 495 Canton Avenue, Milton. Please park and enter in the rear.

Courageous Conversations and True Story Theater present a comprehensive Active Bystander Training free of cost to interested participants in the greater Boston area. The 3 hour workshop will be tailored specifically to the work of Courageous Conversations and the needs of our community. It will serve as an enlivening introduction to taking constructive action on three main categories:

  • EVERYDAY BIGOTRY: When someone you know personally (e.g. a co-worker, family member, neighbor) says or does something bigoted, whether intentionally or unintentionally.
  • PUBLIC HARASSMENT: When you witness someone you do not know being the target of verbal abuse or prejudice (e.g. on the subway)
  • OBLIVIOUSNESS: When your own ignorance may cause unintentional harm to others (e.g. “micro-agressions” and hidden bias) + tips on being a good ally.

True Story Theater workshops include Playback Theatre, a form of improvised story-telling theater used around the world to build trust and connection among people across differences. Playback creates a safe container for participants to express strong feelings, and brings the issues alive as the actors dramatize different scenarios and invite those from the audience who wish to try out different possible interventions. Participants practice new skills in pairs and small groups.

What happens in a True Story Theater performance?  Our events bring together the delight of improvisation with the courageous vulnerability of people sharing their personal truth.

The show’s emcee (called “the conductor”) facilitates brief, spontaneous conversations with volunteers from the audience who share their own feelings and experiences related to the show’s theme.  After each conversation, the actors and musician immediately embody the key feelings and actions they heard, using movement, music, dialogue, and superb listening. All of it is improvised on the spot. During the course of a 75 minute show, True Story enacts about 6-8 stories.

From this simple interaction, audience members feel validated, laugh, cry, get insights about their lives, and feel an expanded sense of community. You can share a moment from your life and see it performed, or just come to watch.

What are True Story Theater’s classes like?  We will teach you the basics of Playback Theatre, which can hone your listening skills for everyday life.  All are welcome.  Classes are supportive, informal, intimate, and fun, an enriching experience for both newcomers and experienced actors.
