Online Playback Theatre Class – Ages 11-14

August 5, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

True Story Theater invites middle schoolers and incoming high schoolers (ages 11-14) to two playful improvisational theatre workshops!

Attend one or both dates:
Wednesday, August 5 and Wednesday, August 12 at 11-12pm ET.

Playback Theatre is a form of improvisational theater in which actors dramatize audience member’s real-life stories without scripts. In the workshop, True Story Theater educators teach Playback forms to students and invite everyone to share their stories— big and small!

In a recent youth workshop, one participant exclaimed “I don’t know how anyone could be bored doing this workshop!” In this upcoming class for 11 – 14 year olds looking to challenge their acting, listening, and empathetic skills, we will seek to have just as much fun!

During this workshop, we will encourage students to tell stories, take risks to independently playback scenes, and learn specific Playback forms through guided modeling and many opportunities to practice.

Computer access to Wifi and camera sharing abilities
A guardian or adult nearby to help with tech support and any off-screen needs
If available, a quiet(er) space with enough room to move around comfortably on screen.
No prior acting experience required.
Students with particular physical, emotional, and intellectual differences are invited to apply. Prior communication with facilitators is requested to ensure support for the student while in the workshop. Email Francidumar(AT)

What happens in a True Story Theater performance?  Our events bring together the delight of improvisation with the courageous vulnerability of people sharing their personal truth.

The show’s emcee (called “the conductor”) facilitates brief, spontaneous conversations with volunteers from the audience who share their own feelings and experiences related to the show’s theme.  After each conversation, the actors and musician immediately embody the key feelings and actions they heard, using movement, music, dialogue, and superb listening. All of it is improvised on the spot. During the course of a 75 minute show, True Story enacts about 6-8 stories.

From this simple interaction, audience members feel validated, laugh, cry, get insights about their lives, and feel an expanded sense of community. You can share a moment from your life and see it performed, or just come to watch.

What are True Story Theater’s classes like?  We will teach you the basics of Playback Theatre, which can hone your listening skills for everyday life.  All are welcome.  Classes are supportive, informal, intimate, and fun, an enriching experience for both newcomers and experienced actors.
