Playback Theatre online: experiments in greater audience participation

December 10, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Get your ticket for this show on Eventbrite.

Please join True Story Theater in an online experiment:

Playback Theatre always involves some amount of audience participation: at very least, 5-10 audience members volunteer to share important moments from their lives, which the actors and musicians then dramatize.

In this show, we will experiment with expanding audience involvement.  For instance, we are likely to:

  • Choose the performance theme based on audience input: In a brief, facilitated process, audience members will share personal and wide-world concerns they have at the present moment. The emcee will choose a strong show theme that many have in common.
  • Empower the individual story-sharers to engage more in the enactments: including pausing the action, asking for re-dos, and adding a “coda” to their piece.
  • Use tools available on Zoom for audience members to connect more with each other and with they resonate with the enactments.

Whether you are brand new to Playback Theatre, or have seen (or performed in) it many times please join us in the fun and value of exploring new ways to increase deep listening, empathy and connection.

What happens in a True Story Theater performance?  Our events bring together the delight of improvisation with the courageous vulnerability of people sharing their personal truth.

The show’s emcee (called “the conductor”) facilitates brief, spontaneous conversations with volunteers from the audience who share their own feelings and experiences related to the show’s theme.  After each conversation, the actors and musician immediately embody the key feelings and actions they heard, using movement, music, dialogue, and superb listening. All of it is improvised on the spot. During the course of a 75 minute show, True Story enacts about 6-8 stories.

From this simple interaction, audience members feel validated, laugh, cry, get insights about their lives, and feel an expanded sense of community. You can share a moment from your life and see it performed, or just come to watch.

What are True Story Theater’s classes like?  We will teach you the basics of Playback Theatre, which can hone your listening skills for everyday life.  All are welcome.  Classes are supportive, informal, intimate, and fun, an enriching experience for both newcomers and experienced actors.
