We’ve got new stories to tell and to hear: stories that connect us in new and extraordinary ways to ourselves and to each other. Please join True Story Theater for one or more Zoom performances, as we share and listen to stories, bringing them to life through Playback Theatre—improvisational, interactive enactments of audience members’ stories aimed to offer empathy, healing, and connection.

Our trained team of actors will listen to and reflect your experiences—your challenges, hopes, surprises, gratitude, and dreams for the future. Audience members can volunteer to share stories, or can choose to simply watch. The event will include community-building moments (with all participants on video) as well as short “break-outs” to speak in smaller groups.

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to move our lives From the Ordinary to the Extraordinary—and back again. We’re navigating the uncertainty, challenges, sometimes unexpected joys of staying at home; the courage and fear of working on the frontlines of the crisis; the heartbreak of losing loved ones; and the unexpected new digital connections, and newness in the familiarity of home. And we’re finding out how we can care for one another, how we can ask for help, and how we—individually and collectively, in-person and digitally—are finding new ways to sustain ourselves and each other.

This True Story Theater performance series is initiated by the Board of Directors.

What happens in a True Story Theater performance?  Our events bring together the delight of improvisation with the courageous vulnerability of people sharing their personal truth.

The show’s emcee (called “the conductor”) facilitates brief, spontaneous conversations with volunteers from the audience who share their own feelings and experiences related to the show’s theme.  After each conversation, the actors and musician immediately embody the key feelings and actions they heard, using movement, music, dialogue, and superb listening. All of it is improvised on the spot. During the course of a 75 minute show, True Story enacts about 6-8 stories.

From this simple interaction, audience members feel validated, laugh, cry, get insights about their lives, and feel an expanded sense of community. You can share a moment from your life and see it performed, or just come to watch.

What are True Story Theater’s classes like?  We will teach you the basics of Playback Theatre, which can hone your listening skills for everyday life.  All are welcome.  Classes are supportive, informal, intimate, and fun, an enriching experience for both newcomers and experienced actors.
