November 17, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Saturday, November 17, 2018, 7:30 – 9pm

Sharing Stories About Personal Experiences of Confronting Injustice: An Evening of Moving Interactive Performance Theater
RSVP here

A benefit event for Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries.
United Parish of Auburndale, 64 Hancock St, Auburndale, MA 02466

What have you experienced personally? What has offended or harmed you? When have you acted or witnessed others do something–and did it make a difference?

The evening will begin with an interactive performance using personal stories–a key to human connection. In an interactive playback theater performance, volunteers from the audience are supported to share what is going on in their lives in our fractured society today. On the spot, actors then portray the heart of what they heard using music, movement, and dialogue. From this simple interaction, people laugh, cry, share fresh insights, and most of all, bond.

This moving improvisational performance will explore stories of action and healing from painful social mistreatments of all sorts (e.g. racial, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic). Respectful audience participation is encouraged. The evening will end with a reception with light refreshments, providing a special opportunity to engage with the actors.

Tickets are $50; group price of 10 tickets for $450. Please consider buying a sponsor ticket at $100; group price of 10 sponsor tickets for $950. Students and income challenged: $25 or what you can contribute. Proceeds benefit further CMM programming.

What happens in a True Story Theater performance?  Our events bring together the delight of improvisation with the courageous vulnerability of people sharing their personal truth.

The show’s emcee (called “the conductor”) facilitates brief, spontaneous conversations with volunteers from the audience who share their own feelings and experiences related to the show’s theme.  After each conversation, the actors and musician immediately embody the key feelings and actions they heard, using movement, music, dialogue, and superb listening. All of it is improvised on the spot. During the course of a 75 minute show, True Story enacts about 6-8 stories.

From this simple interaction, audience members feel validated, laugh, cry, get insights about their lives, and feel an expanded sense of community. You can share a moment from your life and see it performed, or just come to watch.

What are True Story Theater’s classes like?  We will teach you the basics of Playback Theatre, which can hone your listening skills for everyday life.  All are welcome.  Classes are supportive, informal, intimate, and fun, an enriching experience for both newcomers and experienced actors.
