Stories of Unexpected Love

February 12, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

- $15

Unexpected love – a brief encounter or an enduring relationship with a person, a creature, a place, nature, work, space, time – can touch our heart and change our life forever. Love can come into our life at the least expected time, in the least expected place, in the least expected form, or in the least expected way. When has love taken you by surprise? What form did it take, and how did it touch or change you? What did you discover or learn?

Join True Story for this online community-building improvisational theater experience in which personal stories from audience volunteers are respectfully transformed into theatre pieces in the moment.

Come to share a story or listen and watch as True Story’s actors creatively embody the essence of each story in music, song, movement and dialogue. This will be an event full of adventure, warmth and insight as the actors strive to capture the heart of each story shared, with the audience as witness.

Playback Theatre can offer new perspectives, a space to be seen, heard and known, a memorable artistic experience, and an enhanced sense of connection with and empathy for self and others. This event is open to everyone and all are welcome.

What happens in a True Story Theater performance?  Our events bring together the delight of improvisation with the courageous vulnerability of people sharing their personal truth.

The show’s emcee (called “the conductor”) facilitates brief, spontaneous conversations with volunteers from the audience who share their own feelings and experiences related to the show’s theme.  After each conversation, the actors and musician immediately embody the key feelings and actions they heard, using movement, music, dialogue, and superb listening. All of it is improvised on the spot. During the course of a 75 minute show, True Story enacts about 6-8 stories.

From this simple interaction, audience members feel validated, laugh, cry, get insights about their lives, and feel an expanded sense of community. You can share a moment from your life and see it performed, or just come to watch.

What are True Story Theater’s classes like?  We will teach you the basics of Playback Theatre, which can hone your listening skills for everyday life.  All are welcome.  Classes are supportive, informal, intimate, and fun, an enriching experience for both newcomers and experienced actors.
