More about True Story Theater’s Work

Over the past three years during the pandemic, True Story Theater successfully adapted our uniquely interactive art form to Zoom, bringing people together from both the Boston region and worldwide to share their stories about the unexpected challenges and joys of the turbulent times.

We asked questions and listened for the answers… How do we love and care for ourselves and each other in a global pandemic? We explored the nature of race, difference, and identity, both visible and invisible. Our active bystander workshops helped people learn to stand up effectively to bias and bigotry. Our ongoing open Playback workshops and classes helped participants see themselves and others more deeply and compassionately.

Please Join Us

True Story Theater does 75-100 public and private performances and workshops a year. We welcome and honor the many untold stories from under-represented and marginalized communities. This bi-annual fundraiser is crucial to help us provide powerful workshops and performances to many communities and groups that do not have the budget to hire us.

Our fundraising goal for this event is $5,000. Your donations will help us to match grants we have received and ensure that our programs are accessible to all. Even if you can’t attend the event, you can still donate, buy a ticket for yourself, or gift a friend.

Thank you for your support! We appreciate you!

What happens in a True Story Theater performance?  Our events bring together the delight of improvisation with the courageous vulnerability of people sharing their personal truth.

The show’s emcee (called “the conductor”) facilitates brief, spontaneous conversations with volunteers from the audience who share their own feelings and experiences related to the show’s theme.  After each conversation, the actors and musician immediately embody the key feelings and actions they heard, using movement, music, dialogue, and superb listening. All of it is improvised on the spot. During the course of a 75 minute show, True Story enacts about 6-8 stories.

From this simple interaction, audience members feel validated, laugh, cry, get insights about their lives, and feel an expanded sense of community. You can share a moment from your life and see it performed, or just come to watch.

What are True Story Theater’s classes like?  We will teach you the basics of Playback Theatre, which can hone your listening skills for everyday life.  All are welcome.  Classes are supportive, informal, intimate, and fun, an enriching experience for both newcomers and experienced actors.
