What’s Happening, People?

April 9, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

- $15 – $30
(c) 2021 soarraptors.org

In this interactive performance, True Story Theater will bring to life personal stories about how we live our lives, from macro to micro.

DESCRIPTION

What a time we are living in. Spring is finally here in the Northern Hemisphere, and although the pandemic is still surging in some places around the globe, the endemic phase is on the horizon and a return to “normal life” is in the wind. In Ukraine, normal life was only yesterday – now homes and lives are lost as Russia invades a sovereign nation and war rages again in Europe.

We are all affected by these tectonic planetary shifts on a daily basis, as babies are born, people we love pass away, and our lives go on. We grieve, we celebrate, we let go, we start again, finding ways to lift ourselves and each other up. What’s happening in your life? Come share stories about your world, your day, your family, relationships, work and play.

Join True Story for this online community-building improvisational theater experience in which personal stories from audience volunteers are respectfully transformed into theatre pieces in the moment.

Come to share a story or listen and watch as True Story’s actors creatively embody the essence of each story in dialogue, music, movement and song. This will be an event full of deep listening, honest reflection, warmth and insight, as the actors strive to capture the heart of each story shared, with the audience as witness.

Playback Theatre can offer new perspectives, a space to be seen, heard and known, a memorable artistic experience, and an enhanced sense of connection with and empathy for self and others.

This event is open to everyone and all are welcome.

What happens in a True Story Theater performance?  Our events bring together the delight of improvisation with the riveting vulnerability of people sharing their personal truth.

The show’s emcee (called “the conductor”) facilitates brief, spontaneous conversations with volunteers from the audience who share their own feelings and experiences related to the show’s theme.  After each conversation, the actors and musician immediately embody the key feelings and actions they heard, using movement, music, dialogue, and superb listening. All of it is improvised on the spot. During the course of a 75 minute show, True Story enacts about 6-8 stories.

From this simple interaction, audience members laugh, cry, get insights about their lives, and feel an expanded sense of community. You can share a moment from your life and see it performed, or just come to watch.

What are True Story Theater’s classes like?  We will teach you the basic of Playback Theatre, which can hone your listening skills for everyday life.  All are welcome.  Classes are supportive, informal, intimate, and fun, an enriching experience for both newcomers and experienced actors.
